Ghana to Add New Presidential Aircraft to State Fleet by November

Government says the move will strengthen state aviation capacity and end reliance on privately sourced aircraft for presidential travel.

The Government of Ghana is expected to acquire an additional aircraft for presidential travel by November this year, according to Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama.

The announcement forms part of efforts to strengthen the country’s aviation capabilities and ensure that official travel by the President relies fully on state-owned resources.

Dr. Mahama explained that the planned acquisition will add new aircraft to the presidential fleet, including one dedicated specifically to transporting the Head of State. Once delivered, the aircraft will support safer and more efficient travel for official duties both locally and internationally.

The revelation comes amid public discussions surrounding the President’s recent use of a private jet owned by his brother for some official trips. Critics had raised concerns about the arrangement and the perception of possible conflict of interest.

Addressing the issue, Dr. Mahama noted that public scrutiny is a normal part of democratic governance and should be welcomed. He stressed that presidential travel involves complex considerations including security requirements, diplomatic scheduling, and the need for communication systems that allow the President to function effectively while abroad.

He indicated that the acquisition of additional aircraft is part of broader efforts to retool and strengthen the capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces and the country’s state aviation infrastructure.

Once the new aircraft becomes operational later this year, the government expects it will eliminate the need for temporary arrangements involving private jets and provide a more sustainable and transparent system for presidential travel.

The move is also intended to reinforce public confidence in the management of state resources while improving logistical support for high-level government engagements.
