Lawyers for former Ghana Scholarship Secretariat Registrar, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, have rejected allegations of wrongdoing made against him by Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland, Sabah Zita Benson.
In a press release, the lawyers described the allegations as “false and misleading.” They said the comments were aimed at “renewing public ridicule” against their client.
The legal team said Dr Agyemang performed his duties with diligence and professionalism during his tenure as Registrar.
“Our client maintains that he executed his work as former Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat with utmost diligence and therefore denies any wrongdoing,” the lawyers said.
The lawyers also noted that investigations into alleged corruption in the award of scholarships under the previous administration had already begun.
They questioned the High Commissioner’s decision to discuss the matter publicly while the investigations were still ongoing.
“The High Commissioner’s resort to the media to publicly berate our client, rather than allowing the appropriate security and investigative bodies to discharge their mandate, is regrettable and unwarranted,” the statement said.
According to the lawyers, the High Commissioner has made similar allegations in the past, despite the ongoing investigations by state security and investigative agencies.
They described the allegations as “wild” and said Dr Agyemang had cooperated fully with the relevant authorities.
“Our client has not only availed himself to the said state security agencies but has fully cooperated with them,” the lawyers said.
They added that Dr Agyemang had cooperated with the investigations to ensure that the allegations were properly examined, his name cleared and the matter brought to a final conclusion.
The lawyers described their client as “a law-abiding citizen” who remains committed to the rule of law and due process.
They said Dr Agyemang was focused on serving the people of Abuakwa South and carrying out the mandate entrusted to him.
“Our client remains confident that in the fullness of time, the truth will prevail, and he will be vindicated,” the statement added.
