Ghanaian football mourns promising 20-year-old talent after deadly highway ambush

Ghanaian football has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Dominic Frimpong, a winger for Berekum Chelsea F.C., who was killed during an armed robbery attack on the club’s team bus.

The incident occurred on Sunday night as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture against Samartex. According to reports, armed assailants blocked the road and opened fire on the vehicle as it attempted to escape the ambush.

Players and officials reportedly fled into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire, but Frimpong was struck in the head during the attack. He was rushed to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries, becoming the only confirmed fatality among those on board.

The 20-year-old, who was on loan from Aduana FC, had made several appearances this season and was widely regarded as a promising young talent in Ghanaian football.

In a statement, the Ghana Football Association expressed “profound shock and deep sorrow” over the incident, extending condolences to Frimpong’s family, teammates, and the entire Berekum Chelsea fraternity.

Authorities have since launched an investigation into the attack, with police promising to bring the perpetrators to justice. The tragedy has also renewed concerns over the safety of teams traveling for domestic matches, following a series of similar incidents in recent years.

Frimpong’s death marks a devastating loss not only for his club but for Ghanaian football as a whole, cutting short a career that many believed held great promise.
