Experienced tactician to lead Ghana national football team into a challenging World Cup run across North America

Carlos Queiroz has been appointed as the new head coach of the Ghana national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a decision by the Ghana Football Association in consultation with key stakeholders.

The highly experienced Portuguese tactician, who has previously managed top sides including Real Madrid and Manchester United, as well as national teams such as Portugal and Iran, will lead Ghana into the global tournament set to be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Queiroz brings with him a wealth of World Cup experience. He guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managed Iran during the 2014 and 2018 editions of the competition. His résumé also includes coaching stints in Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar.

He is expected to begin work immediately as preparations intensify for the tournament, which kicks off on June 11, 2026. Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, Canada, before facing strong group opponents England and Croatia.

The appointment signals a renewed ambition by the Ghana Football Association to make a significant impact on the world stage, with Queiroz’s experience seen as key to guiding the Black Stars through a competitive tournament.
