Ghana Urged to Postpone Umrah Travel Amid Middle East Security Concerns

Foreign Affairs Ministry calls for caution as regional tensions persist

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has advised Ghanaians planning to undertake Umrah to reconsider their travel arrangements due to the evolving security situation in parts of the Middle East.

In a statement issued on March 2, 2026, the Ministry urged prospective pilgrims who have not yet departed Ghana to temporarily suspend their travel plans until stability is restored in the region.

Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca and may be performed at any time of the year, unlike the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

The Ministry emphasized that protecting the lives and welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad remains the government’s top priority.

Ghanaians currently in the Saudi Arabia for Umrah have been encouraged to remain calm, strictly adhere to directives issued by Saudi authorities, and maintain close contact with their travel agencies, the Ghana Embassy in Riyadh, and the Consulate-General in Jeddah.

The Ministry added that officials are on hand to provide necessary information and emergency consular assistance.

For enquiries within Ghana, citizens may call +233 240 913 284 or +233 240 793 072. Ghanaians in Saudi Arabia can reach officials on +966 59 776 2966 or +966 56 818 1974, or contact the Embassy via email at [email protected].
