Mahama to Deliver Second State of the Nation Address Today

Ghanaians and Organised Labour look to the President for bold solutions on jobs, food security, and economic stability.

President John Dramani Mahama is set to present his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament today at 10:00 a.m.

The annual constitutional address, delivered in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, will outline the country’s economic, social, and financial outlook. The event is expected to be attended by Members of Parliament, Ministers of State, members of the diplomatic corps, and other invited guests.

President Mahama’s address is anticipated to review developments over the past year and detail policies and programmes introduced to tackle challenges across key sectors of the economy.

Public Expectations High

Across the country, many Ghanaians are calling for decisive action on pressing national concerns. Among the top issues expected to feature prominently in the address are the development of a vibrant urban transport system, job creation, reliable electricity supply, and strengthened food security.

Organised Labour Demands Clear Commitments

Ahead of the address, Organised Labour has outlined specific expectations, urging the President to prioritise employment generation, affordable housing, pension sustainability, and measures to ease the rising cost of living.

At a media engagement on February 26, labour leaders voiced concern over increasing unemployment, particularly among the youth, and called for clear, measurable strategies.

Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (Ghana), Mr. Joshua Ansah, emphasised the need for concrete commitments rather than broad assurances.

“As a union leader, I will go for job creation and a good labour law review that governs our labour issues. The President has spoken about the creation of jobs, but we want him to state the areas where these jobs will be created so that we can also monitor and give our commentary,” he stated.

He identified the cocoa sector as a major opportunity for employment, suggesting that processing at least 50 percent of cocoa locally could significantly boost job creation while ensuring decent work standards.

Beyond employment, Organised Labour is also advocating policies to improve access to food and housing, alongside reforms to strengthen pensions.

The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, Mr. Tanko Musah, stressed the urgency of improving basic living conditions for workers and called for greater investment in education to address persistent sector challenges.

Organised Labour maintains that this year’s SONA must go beyond rhetoric, delivering practical and actionable measures capable of restoring confidence and easing economic pressures on Ghanaian workers.
