Chelsea FC endured one of the darkest nights in their European history after suffering a crushing 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, losing 3-0 on the night at Stamford Bridge. The result equals Chelsea’s joint-heaviest defeat in a two-legged European tie, as the reigning champions proved far too clinical from the outset.
PSG wasted no time asserting dominance, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opening the scoring just six minutes in after capitalizing on hesitant defending. Bradley Barcola doubled the lead in the 14th minute with a stunning finish, effectively ending the contest early and silencing the home crowd. Substitute Senny Mayulu added a third late on, capping a dominant display and sealing an emphatic progression to the next round.
Despite flashes of attacking intent from Chelsea, including efforts from Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernández, the hosts were repeatedly exposed on the counter-attack. Frustration boiled over in the stands, with fans directing chants at both former owner Roman Abramovich and the current ownership as the team struggled to respond.
Head coach Liam Rosenior admitted the result was difficult to take, acknowledging supporter frustration while insisting the team must improve. “This is a fantastic football club where the fans want success instantly,” he said, promising to deliver better performances in the future.
To compound a miserable evening, defender Trevoh Chalobah was stretchered off late on with a high ankle sprain, leaving Chelsea with further injury concerns. PSG now advance to face the winner of the tie between Liverpool FC and Galatasaray, while Chelsea are left to reflect on a humbling European exit.
