A student of the Ghana School of Law has tragically died after suffering a medical emergency during lectures, sending shockwaves through the academic community. The incident occurred on Saturday, March 21, during an ongoing class session, according to the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
In a statement, SRC President Nana Opoku Ware confirmed that the student suddenly fell ill during lectures and was quickly assisted by colleagues. He was rushed to the Ridge Hospital, where medical personnel made efforts to save his life, but he was unfortunately pronounced dead. The council described the incident as deeply painful, extending condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the wider student body.
Eyewitness accounts paint a distressing picture of the student’s final moments. A colleague, believed to be a medical doctor, recounted that the student had earlier complained about high blood pressure but remained active in class. His condition reportedly worsened suddenly, with visible signs including heavy sweating and chest discomfort shortly before he collapsed.
The incident has also raised serious concerns about emergency response systems on campus. The SRC noted reports suggesting that the school’s clinic may not have been accessible at the time urgent care was needed. While these claims are yet to be fully verified, the council says they highlight critical gaps in student healthcare and emergency preparedness.
In response, the SRC has called for an urgent meeting with school management to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. It is also pushing for immediate reforms, including improved access to on-campus medical care, clearer emergency protocols, and increased investment in student health infrastructure.
Authorities at the school have since begun offering counselling and psychological support to affected students as the community grapples with the sudden loss. The SRC emphasised that the safety and well-being of students must remain a top priority, urging swift action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
