Speaking at Ghana’s official send-off ceremony before the squad departed for Canada, Ayew emphasized the immense responsibility that comes with representing the country at the World Cup and called on supporters to continue backing the team throughout the tournament.
The 34-year-old forward takes over the captain’s armband at a crucial moment in Ghana’s football history, with the Black Stars aiming to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run in 2010.
Addressing fans and dignitaries at the event, Ayew expressed confidence in the team’s determination despite the difficult challenge that lies ahead.
“We have three massive games for us and we want to make you guys proud, want to make Ghana proud. Obviously it’s not going to be easy but with your prayers and your support, hopefully we’ll be successful.”
“We want to thank everyone for your support and keep on praying for us because we’re here to make history.”
Ayew’s words reflect the belief and ambition within the squad as they prepare to face England, Croatia and Panama in a challenging Group D.
The veteran attacker enters the tournament in outstanding form after playing a pivotal role in Ghana’s qualification campaign. Ayew recorded an impressive 14 goal contributions, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists as the Black Stars finished top of Group I to secure their place at the World Cup.
His leadership has extended beyond the pitch. Recently, Ayew revealed the depth of his belief in the team by jokingly pledging to reserve space on his back for a tattoo of the World Cup trophy should Ghana achieve the unthinkable and lift football’s most coveted prize.
The tournament will also mark a personal milestone for Ayew, who is set to become Ghana’s oldest player to feature at a World Cup, surpassing the record previously held by Denis Odoi.
Under the guidance of experienced coach Carlos Queiroz, the Black Stars have been encouraged to embrace the responsibility of wearing the national jersey and inspire the next generation of Ghanaian footballers.
With expectations high and history within reach, Jordan Ayew and his teammates are determined to ensure Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance becomes one to remember.
