GES Warns Teachers Against Protests at Headquarters

Education authorities urge staff to use official channels to address grievances.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has advised teachers across the country to follow established administrative procedures when raising concerns, warning against protests or demonstrations at its national headquarters.

In a directive issued to education officials, the Service expressed concern about a growing trend where some teachers leave their duty posts to travel to Accra to present grievances directly at the national office. According to the GES, such actions bypass the proper administrative structure designed to address issues at different levels of the education system.

The Service emphasized that teachers with concerns should first report them to their respective heads of school. If the matter remains unresolved, it should be escalated through the district and regional directorates before reaching the national level.

GES management explained that the headquarters primarily interacts with regional offices and recognized teacher unions rather than individual teachers or unapproved groups. The directive is intended to maintain order within the system and ensure that classroom activities are not disrupted.

The Service further cautioned teachers against engaging in protests, picketing, or media interactions during official working hours. It warned that teachers who abandon their posts to participate in such activities could face disciplinary action under the professional code governing educators.

GES also urged school heads and district directors to monitor compliance and report cases of absenteeism, stressing that teachers must remain focused on their primary responsibility of delivering quality education to students.
