Cabinet Set to Deliberate on Constitutional Review Recommendations Today, May 14.

The special meeting is expected to be chaired by President John Dramani Mahama.

Government is preparing to take key decisions on proposed reforms to the 1992 Constitution.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed the development, stating that a draft position paper has already been prepared following extensive consultations and legal review by the Attorney-General and the President’s legal team.

Speaking on Joy News, Mr Kwakye Ofosu explained that President Mahama had earlier directed that the committee’s report be thoroughly studied to guide government’s official response to the constitutional review proposals.

According to him, that process has now been completed, paving the way for Cabinet deliberations.

“So Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special Cabinet session chaired by the President himself to consider the draft position paper,” he said.

He noted that the meeting would enable Cabinet to determine government’s final position on the various recommendations submitted under the constitutional review exercise.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu further explained that, unlike a commission of inquiry which requires the issuance of a white paper, the constitutional review process only requires government to produce a position paper outlining its stance on the proposals.

He indicated that once Cabinet approves the document, it will be made public to allow citizens to understand government’s position on the proposed constitutional reforms.

According to him, the next phase after Cabinet approval would involve implementation measures, including the establishment of an implementation committee.

He also disclosed that the recommendations would not be treated uniformly, explaining that some proposals may be accepted fully, others modified, while some could be rejected based on practicality and feasibility considerations.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu added that although the special Cabinet session would focus primarily on the constitutional review report, other matters may also be discussed during the meeting.

He assured that government would continue engaging the public after Cabinet concludes its deliberations on the proposals.
