Ghana Police have arrested 10 suspects, including eight Chinese nationals and two Ghanaians, in a major operation targeting the theft of cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The suspects were arrested during a raid at a company located in the Kpone Industrial Area in Tema, following intelligence reports that stolen ECG cables were being processed and prepared for export.
Police Discover Large Quantities of Suspected Stolen ECG Cables
The operation was carried out by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy.
According to CID Director-General COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, officers found dozens of workers dismantling electrical cables and stripping them to extract metal components.
Authorities recovered more than 100 drums of electrical cables, believed to be property of the Electricity Company of Ghana. Investigators say the cables were being processed into metal blocks suspected to be intended for export.
Suspects Include Chinese Nationals and Ghanaian Accomplices
Police identified the Ghanaian suspects as Samuel Ekpe and Priscilla Padu.
The eight Chinese nationals arrested during the operation include:
- Yuxiaoting
- He Jing
- Xu Changjiu
- Li Lei
- Chen Jin
- Zheng Ma
- Wang Jian
- Bin Bin
Authorities believe some of the foreign suspects held managerial roles within the company where the cables were being processed.
Investigations Ongoing
Police have stationed a 24-hour security presence at the facility to prevent the removal of materials while investigations continue.
Officials say the theft and illegal processing of ECG cables pose a serious threat to Ghana’s power infrastructure, as it can disrupt electricity supply to homes and businesses.
The Ghana Police Service says investigations are ongoing and more arrests could follow as authorities work to dismantle the suspected cable theft network.
