Accra Court Awards ₵200,000 to Woman After Broken Marriage Promise

A businessman in his 60s found liable for emotional and financial harm after failing to fulfil his vow to marry

The Accra Circuit Court has directed a prominent businessman to pay ₵200,000 in damages to a woman after ruling that he breached his promise to marry her.

The civil case, which initially began with an attempt to obtain an ejectment order, took a turn when the court found that the businessman’s repeated assurances of marriage induced the woman to invest years of her life, trust, and personal resources into the relationship—only for him to walk away without fulfilling his commitment.

In delivering judgment, the court cited the emotional distress, social embarrassment, and financial hardship the woman suffered as a result of the broken promise. The ruling also included the imposition of a constructive trust over an East Legon property connected to the dispute.

Legal experts say this case highlights the growing recognition by Ghanaian courts of the serious consequences that can arise from personal commitments and the potential for civil accountability when those commitments are not honoured.
