President John Dramani Mahama has signed into law the Legal Education Bill and the Value for Money Office Act, marking a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to strengthen governance, improve accountability and advance key institutional reforms.
The newly enacted legislation is expected to reshape Ghana’s legal education system while introducing stricter oversight mechanisms for public sector spending.
The Legal Education Bill is designed to address long-standing capacity challenges within the country’s legal training system by paving the way for the accreditation of more law schools to offer professional legal education.

The reform is expected to expand access to legal training for aspiring lawyers and reduce pressure on existing institutions that have faced increasing demand over the years.
Legal education stakeholders have long called for reforms to improve accessibility and modernise the professional training process, citing limited admission opportunities and infrastructure constraints.

In addition to education reforms, President Mahama also assented to the Value for Money Office Act, which seeks to strengthen financial oversight and ensure more efficient use of public resources.
The law introduces enhanced accountability measures aimed at promoting transparency in public spending and improving value assessment in government projects and expenditures.
Government officials say the legislation will play a critical role in safeguarding public funds and reinforcing trust in state institutions through stricter financial scrutiny.

The signing of both laws reflects the administration’s broader commitment to governance reform, institutional efficiency and responsive public service delivery.
Analysts say the implementation of the new legal framework could have lasting effects on Ghana’s justice system and public financial management landscape.
With the Legal Education Bill and the Value for Money Office Act now in force, attention is expected to shift toward implementation, enforcement and the long-term impact of the reforms on national development.
