Ultra-modern link to slash congestion at Accra Airport, ushering in VIP lounges and premium boarding

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) will soon commence construction of an ultra-modern concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3 at Accra International Airport (AIA), aimed at alleviating chronic congestion and delivering world-class facilities for passengers.

The ambitious expansion project, part of GACL’s broader modernization drive at the busy Accra hub, is set to break ground this month.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister in charge of government communications, announced the development in a Facebook post on Friday, highlighting its potential to transform the traveler experience.

In excerpts from the post, Kwakye Ofosu stated, “The Ghana Airport Company Limited has an ambitious programme to expand and modernize facilities at the Accra International Airport. Work will begin this month on an ultra-modern Concourse connecting Terminals 2 and 3 to ease congestion and provide world-class, high-end facilities for the traveling public.”

Key features of the new concourse include:
• Five new passenger boarding bridges

• Five passenger holding area

• Bi-directional travelators for seamless movement

• Five new escalators and elevators

• One VIP lounge

• Four business lounges

• Four new retail and duty-free pods, among other enhancements

The initiative comes amid rising passenger traffic at AIA, Ghana’s premier gateway, which handled over 5 million travelers in 2025 despite ongoing infrastructure strains.

GACL has yet to release a detailed timeline or budget, but officials promise updates as construction advances.

This project aligns with government efforts to upgrade national infrastructure, supporting tourism, trade, and economic growth.
