Ghana Marks 69th Independence Day Celebration

National ceremony held at Jubilee House under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope.”

Ghana is marking its 69th Independence Day today, March 6, with a national celebration at the forecourt of Jubilee House.

The event commemorates Ghana’s historic independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah. The day remains one of the country’s most significant national holidays, bringing together citizens to reflect on Ghana’s journey of nationhood, democracy and development.

This year’s celebration is being held under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” which highlights the country’s commitment to economic recovery, national unity and renewed optimism for the future.

Unlike previous large-scale celebrations held at the Black Star Square, the 69th anniversary ceremony has been earmarked for Jubilee House as part of efforts to host a more modest and cost-effective national event.

The ceremony features a military guard of honour, cultural displays and a presidential address highlighting Ghana’s achievements and the path forward for the nation.

Security agencies including the Ghana Police Service have also put in place traffic and security measures around parts of Accra to ensure a smooth celebration as dignitaries, students and invited guests gather for the historic occasion.

Across the country, regional and district events are also taking place, with schoolchildren, traditional authorities and community members participating in parades and cultural activities to mark the anniversary.

The celebration serves as a reminder of Ghana’s pioneering role as the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence and the enduring spirit of patriotism and resilience among its people.
