World Athletics Championships 4x100m bronze medalist and European Athletics Championships 4x100m silver medalist, Elvis Afrifa, has opened up about his sporting journey and career path.

The 28-year-old Dutch sprinter made these revelations in an interview with Kumasi-based television station Fakye TV, where he disclosed that his sporting career began with football before transitioning into athletics.

According to Afrifa, his decision to switch sports was influenced by self-assessment and advice from close associates.

“I was a footballer before becoming an athlete. I was advised by a friend and schoolmate to move into athletics. With the approval of my parents, I finally made that decision,” he said.

Afrifa explained that although he loved football, he lacked the complete skill set required for the game, despite possessing exceptional speed—an attribute that made athletics a more suitable choice.

Reflecting on his rise, the sprinter expressed deep gratitude to Netherlands, the nation he currently represents.

“The Dutch have been very good and generous to me by believing in and investing in my God-given talent. I will be forever grateful,” he noted.

Afrifa also revealed that he was once contacted by an unknown source to represent Ghana, but felt morally obligated to represent the country that supported his development from a young age.

“I’m a proud Ghanaian and will always see myself as one, but it’s fair to represent the country that believed in me and invested in my career.”

Despite representing the Netherlands, Afrifa urged Ghanaian authorities to prioritize talent identification and investment in sports development.

“Ghana has a lot of talent. With proper investment in athletes and infrastructure, the future will be very bright.”

The sprinter also shared his admiration for Ghanaian football legends, naming Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien, and current star Mohammed Kudus as his favorites.

Looking ahead, Afrifa expressed his ultimate ambition in athletics.

“It’s the dream of every athlete to win an Olympic medal, and I’m looking forward to the next Olympic Games.”

He also cited sprint legend Usain Bolt as his biggest inspiration.

“Usain Bolt inspires me to always try to get better every day. For me, he is the greatest athlete to ever live.”
