A female suspect is now in custody of Dansoman Police unit while investigations continue.
On Tuesday, February 17, 2026 the baby was reportedly stolen from the hospital at Mamprobi in the Ablekuma South constituency.
Following a report from the child’s relatives and health officials at the hospital, the Ghana Police Service quickly began a search for the baby.
A female suspect has been apprehended as enquiries continue to establish the full details surrounding the incident, including how she gained access to the child.
The recovery of the baby was facilitated with the support of the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, Gender Minister, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey who both contributed to coordination between the police, community members and the distressed family.
Addressing journalist at the Dansoman police station on Wednesday February 18, 2026, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection expressed appreciation to the police for their swift response.
She assured that the baby and mother will be given medical attention to ensure their safety and well-being.
“We found the baby. We want to say thank you to the whistleblower and the police that they have been able to work to get the baby united with the mother. The police can attest that yes, that is the baby, the parents have confirmed and then the suspect is in police custody.
“We are going to make sure that the baby and mother are safe. The baby and the mother have been taken for medical attention,” she stated.
The MP and Gender Minister together with officials made sure the baby was safely returned to the Mamprobi Polyclinic.
Medical staff evaluated the infant’s condition as soon as they arrived at the polyclinic, and doctors confirmed that the infant is currently receiving treatment and is being closely monitored.
Dr. Lartey further stated that her ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and security agencies to strengthen safety measures and prevent occurrence of such incident at the hospital.
“The most important thing is that we are going to support the polyclinic to redeem its image and then we are also going to work with the Health Ministry to ensure that the systems and structures we have in place is secured enough for patients and health workers as well,” she stated.
The Minister noted that there is going to be police presence to prevent any community reprisal attack on health workers and the facility.
