President John Dramani Mahama is set to lead Ghana’s delegation to a high-level United Nations session on reparatory justice, as part of an official visit to the United States. The trip will take him to New York and Pennsylvania, where he is expected to engage global leaders on addressing historical injustices linked to the transatlantic slave trade.
At the centre of the visit is a High-Level Special Event at the United Nations headquarters, where President Mahama will deliver a keynote address. The event will bring together world leaders and stakeholders to discuss pathways toward justice for Africans affected by centuries of enslavement and exploitation.
The President is also scheduled to address the UN General Assembly during activities marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. He is expected to present Ghana’s position—backed by the African Union—calling for formal recognition of slavery as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.
As part of the programme, Mahama will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument in New York to honour enslaved Africans. His itinerary also includes academic engagements at Lincoln University and interactions with the Ghanaian community in the United States, reinforcing ties with the diaspora.
The visit underscores Ghana’s growing leadership role in the global reparatory justice conversation, as efforts intensify to secure acknowledgment, accountability, and possible reparations for historical injustices against people of African descent.
