Afenyo-Markin Calls for Abolition of AI Tests in Security Service Recruitment

Minority Leader says technology-driven exams disadvantage many applicants across the country

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin has called on government to scrap the use of artificial intelligence-based aptitude tests in the recruitment process for Ghana’s security services.

According to him, the introduction of AI-powered examinations in the ongoing recruitment exercise has created significant challenges for many applicants, particularly those in rural areas with limited access to reliable internet and digital tools.

Speaking in Parliament, the Effutu Member of Parliament argued that the system places an unfair burden on prospective recruits who must purchase scratch cards and secure internet access before they can take part in the test. He said this requirement makes the process expensive and difficult for many young people seeking to join the security services.

Afenyo-Markin further criticised the structure of the new recruitment system, claiming it centralises the process at the Ministry of the Interior (Ghana) while relying heavily on a private software platform to run AI-generated aptitude examinations.

He also questioned the limited involvement of leadership within the various security services in administering the recruitment exercise, warning that such an arrangement could undermine transparency and accountability.

The Minority Leader therefore urged authorities to review the system and revert to a more inclusive and accessible recruitment method that reflects the realities of applicants across the country.

Government officials, however, have previously explained that the digital testing system was introduced to reduce human interference and ensure a more transparent recruitment process into the security services.

The debate over the AI-based testing system continues as stakeholders assess its effectiveness and its impact on prospective recruits nationwide.
