Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed Wins Ayawaso East By-Election in Landslide Victory

NDC Candidate Secures 63% of Votes in Low-Turnout Poll to Replace Late MP

Voting has officially ended across all 113 polling centres in the Ayawaso East Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, with Electoral Commission officials concluding supervision of the parliamentary by-election.

Out of more than 50,000 registered voters, 16,928 cast their ballots in what observers described as a low-turnout election. At the close of polls, voters elected Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to represent them in Ghana’s 9th Parliament.

The by-election was held to fill the seat left vacant following the death of the Member of Parliament, Nasser Toure Mahama, in January.

Peaceful Poll Amid Heavy Security

The election, held on March 3, was largely incident-free, a development many attributed to the heavy police presence across polling centres.

Several high-profile political figures monitored proceedings. From the NDC, notable personalities included former National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloo, and the party’s Director of Elections, Tanko Computer.

On the NPP side, former Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, and former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson were present at various polling centres.

Swearing-In Next

Following his victory, Baba Jamal is expected to be sworn into office by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, at the next sitting of the House.
