First 300 Ghanaians repatriated from South Africa

The Government of Ghana has successfully repatriated the first batch of 300 Ghanaian nationals from South Africa following growing fears of xenophobic violence and anti-immigrant tensions targeting foreign nationals in the country.

The returnees arrived safely in Ghana as part of an ongoing voluntary evacuation exercise initiated by government authorities in response to mounting concerns over the safety of Ghanaians living and working in South Africa.

Officials say more than 800 Ghanaians registered for repatriation after weeks of anti-immigrant protests reportedly organised by a group identified as March and March.

The protest group is said to have issued a June 30 ultimatum demanding that undocumented immigrants leave South Africa, a development that has heightened anxiety among several foreign communities, including Ghanaians.

Authorities confirmed that 26 of the repatriated Ghanaians had previously been detained in South Africa but were later released and evacuated through diplomatic and government intervention.

Government officials say arrangements are ongoing to facilitate the safe return of the remaining registered Ghanaian nationals who have expressed interest in leaving the country.

As part of efforts to support their reintegration, the government has reportedly provided each of the 300 returnees with seed capital to help them restart their lives and pursue economic activities upon arrival in Ghana.

The repatriation exercise comes amid renewed continental concerns over xenophobic violence in South Africa, where foreign nationals have periodically faced attacks, intimidation and discrimination linked to immigration tensions.

Analysts say the latest developments highlight the growing need for stronger regional cooperation, migration management and protection of African citizens living across the continent.

The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and safety of its citizens abroad while continuing diplomatic engagements aimed at ensuring peaceful coexistence and respect for the rights of all African nationals.

With evacuation efforts still ongoing, authorities say priority remains focused on ensuring the safe return and reintegration of all affected Ghanaians willing to return home.
