Ghana launches first digital E-visa platform

African Passport Holders to Enjoy Free Ghana Visas

President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana’s first fully digital e-Visa portal, introducing a major reform aimed at simplifying visa applications, eliminating in-person embassy visits and improving travel access to the country.

The new system, which went live on Africa Day, May 25, 2026, allows travellers from across the world to complete the entire visa application process online, from form submission and payment to receiving a final decision.

Under the new policy, all holders of African passports travelling to Ghana for business or tourism will be required to apply exclusively through the online e-Visa platform and will not pay any visa fees.

“Effective immediately, all holders of African passports travelling to Ghana for business, or tourism will apply for visas exclusively via the new online e-Visa platform and they will pay no visa fee,” President Mahama announced at the launch event held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City Accra.

Describing the initiative as a major step in Ghana’s digital transformation agenda, the President said the platform reflects the country’s commitment to using technology to improve governance and facilitate legitimate travel.

“This initiative reflects our determination to position Ghana as a forward-looking nation that leverages technology to improve governance, facilitate legitimate travel, deepen continental integration and strengthen national security,” he said.

President Mahama also used the occasion to reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to African unity and openness amid growing migration restrictions in parts of the world.

“Whilst some countries are expelling fellow Africans and making them feel unwelcome, Ghana proudly welcomes them and affirms this is your home,” he stated.

According to government officials, the e-Visa system has been integrated with advanced security and verification mechanisms designed to ensure proper screening and effective monitoring of travellers entering the country.

The launch of the digital platform is expected to improve efficiency, reduce administrative delays and enhance Ghana’s attractiveness as a destination for tourism, business and investment.

The move also aligns with broader continental efforts to promote free movement and strengthen regional integration across Africa.

With the e-Visa service now operational, Ghana has taken a significant step toward modernising its immigration processes while reinforcing its image as an accessible and welcoming gateway to Africa.
