GH¢6.1 million transferred to Ghana medical trust fund

GH¢6.1 Million Boost for Ghana Medical Trust Fund

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department has transferred GH¢6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund from contributions made through President John Dramani Mahama’s salary donation initiative, appointee contributions and penalties imposed for defaults in asset declaration.

The transfer forms part of efforts to support the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, which was established to strengthen healthcare financing and improve access to medical support for citizens.

According to government sources, the amount includes voluntary salary contributions by President Mahama, financial contributions from government appointees and penalties paid by public officials who failed to comply with asset declaration requirements within the stipulated period.

The development highlights the government’s broader efforts to promote accountability while mobilising additional resources to support the health sector.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is expected to provide assistance for critical healthcare interventions and support individuals facing financial difficulties in accessing medical treatment.

The inclusion of penalties from asset declaration defaults also reflects ongoing enforcement measures aimed at strengthening compliance with public accountability regulations.

Asset declaration remains a key constitutional requirement for public office holders in Ghana, intended to promote transparency and prevent abuse of office.

Government officials say the transfer demonstrates a commitment to directing public accountability measures toward national development priorities, particularly healthcare delivery.

The contribution comes at a time when Ghana’s health sector continues to face growing demands for improved infrastructure, medical equipment and financial support for patient care.

Analysts say sustained funding for healthcare initiatives will be critical in addressing operational challenges within the sector and improving access to quality medical services nationwide.

The transfer of the GH¢6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is expected to further support ongoing healthcare interventions while reinforcing government efforts to combine accountability and social investment in national development.
